Supergirl continues to face scrutiny ahead of its release as some commentators question the film’s commercial prospects, marketing approach, and the long-term direction of DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
One of the biggest concerns raised is the movie’s box office outlook. According to some analysts and commentators, opening weekend projections have steadily declined over time.
Early expectations reportedly ranged between $70 million and $80 million before falling to around $55 million and then $50 million, with some estimates suggesting a downside scenario of approximately $39 million domestically.
Based on a reported production budget of roughly $170 million to $175 million, along with a substantial global marketing campaign, some critics estimate that the film may need to earn between $500 million and $550 million worldwide to become profitable. They argue that reaching that figure could prove challenging if the current projections hold.

The discussion has also extended to Warner Bros.’ promotional campaign. Some commentators believe the studio has intensified its marketing efforts in response to concerns surrounding the film’s commercial performance.
They point to early screenings and outreach to online creators as signs that the studio is attempting to generate stronger word-of-mouth ahead of release.
Lead actress Milly Alcock has also become part of the conversation following several promotional interviews.
Some critics have focused on comments she made during the film’s press tour, including describing the movie as “beautiful” because it is not centered around a male character.
They also discussed her responses to questions regarding the character’s sexuality, arguing that these topics have shifted attention away from the film itself.
Another criticism centers on Warner Bros.’ choice of media outlets invited to promotional events. Some commentators argue that featuring niche outlets with a focus on identity-related topics has resulted in interviews centered more on social issues than on the movie’s story, characters, or action.
They believe this approach does little to attract longtime superhero fans who are primarily interested in the film’s entertainment value.
Beyond Supergirl itself, the discussion has expanded to the future of the DC Universe. Some critics have questioned James Gunn’s leadership, citing reports and speculation about executive contracts while arguing that the studio’s current strategy lacks clear momentum.
They also contend that placing significant focus on Supergirl early in the rebooted DC Universe may have been a strategic mistake, believing other characters or projects would have provided a stronger foundation for the franchise.
Whether those concerns prove accurate will ultimately depend on the film’s reception from audiences and its box office performance.
