DC Studios’ latest superhero film, Supergirl, is drawing criticism for its weak storytelling, forgettable characters, and underwhelming visuals despite receiving praise for Jason Momoa’s debut as Lobo.
The film follows Kara on what has been described as a familiar “buddy fetch quest,” as she searches for an antidote for her poisoned dog, Krypto, while teaming up with a survivor seeking revenge against the same villain. Although the story attempts to explore deeper emotional themes, including ideas similar to the biblical “prodigal son” narrative, critics argue that those themes are never fully developed, leaving the emotional payoff feeling hollow.
One of the biggest complaints centers on Kara herself. Critics say the heroine is difficult to connect with because she comes across as a chaotic character who still presents herself as morally superior. As a result, her personal growth throughout the film feels unconvincing, making the final act less impactful than intended.
The movie’s visual presentation has also drawn criticism, particularly its lighting. Several scenes reportedly feature bright natural light in the background that overwhelms the image, leaving characters in the foreground unusually dark and difficult to see. Reviewers argue that the muddy cinematography distracts from important moments and hurts the overall viewing experience.
Another point of criticism is how the film handles Supergirl’s Kryptonian powers. Critics believe the story repeatedly weakens Kara’s abilities simply to create artificial obstacles. One example cited is a scene in which Supergirl seemingly forgets she possesses X-ray vision, allowing unnecessary tension to drive the plot.
The film’s villain has also been labeled one of its weakest elements. Critics describe the antagonist as generic, lacking personality, memorable motivations, or any distinctive qualities, making the character largely forgettable throughout the story.
Despite the negative reception, Jason Momoa’s performance as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo has emerged as a clear highlight. His energetic and charismatic portrayal has been widely praised, with many viewers believing he brings much-needed excitement whenever he appears on screen. The positive response has even sparked calls for a standalone Lobo project within the expanding DC Universe.
