Reus reveals he turned down Bayern – “I always wanted to play for BVB. It was always the club my heart drew me to.”

Named the Bundesliga Player of the Season, Marco Reus enjoyed a brilliant 2011-12 campaign with Borussia Monchengladbach scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

A host of clubs, including giants Bayern Munich, looked to acquire Reus’ services back then but he eventually completed an €18 million move to Borussia Dortmund.

But the Dortmund skipper, who joined the club’s youth academy as a seven-year-old back in 1996, says he had his heart set on returning to the Signal Iduna Park in 2012 as that is where his loyalty lays.

“The request came [from Bayern], as it did from other clubs,” Reus told in an interview with Sport Bild.

“I have the greatest respect for Bayern Munich and what the club has been doing for decades. But I always wanted to play for BVB. It was always the club my heart drew me to.

“When I played in Gladbach at the time, it was clear to me: within the Bundesliga, I would only change to Dortmund. Otherwise, I will go abroad.”
