Netflix Reimagines Polish Classic The Doll in New Six-Episode Drama Series

Netflix is set to bring one of Poland’s most celebrated literary masterpieces to a global audience with The Doll, a six-episode original series that reimagines Bolesław Prus’ classic 19th-century novel for a contemporary era.

Premiering worldwide on September 16, the series offers a fresh interpretation of the beloved novel while preserving its central themes of love, ambition, social class, and the pursuit of personal freedom.

Widely regarded as one of the most important works of Polish literature, The Doll has long been praised for its exploration of the tensions between wealth, status, and human desire.

The story follows Stanisław Wokulski, an ambitious man determined to rise through Warsaw’s rigid social hierarchy.

As he pursues success, his life becomes increasingly consumed by his feelings for Izabela Łęcka, an aristocratic woman who longs to escape the expectations and limitations imposed by her privileged upbringing.

Their relationship unfolds against a backdrop of profound social change, with the series examining the divide between classes and the sacrifices individuals make in pursuit of love, acceptance, and personal fulfillment.

Through its characters, The Doll explores how wealth and social ambition can both empower and destroy, while questioning whether love alone can overcome deeply entrenched societal barriers.

The adaptation is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paweł Maślona, whose previous work on the award-winning historical film Kos earned widespread praise.

His interpretation reportedly combines dramatic storytelling with an ironic perspective, offering a closer look at the hidden ambitions, rivalries, and power struggles that shape Warsaw’s elite society.

Leading the cast is Tomasz Schuchardt as Stanisław Wokulski alongside Sandra Drzymalska as Izabela Łęcka. They are joined by Dariusz Chojnacki and Jacek Braciak in key supporting roles, forming a strong ensemble for the ambitious literary adaptation.

Originally published in 1890, Bolesław Prus’ The Doll remains one of the defining works of Polish realism and has been studied by generations of readers.
