Luis Enrique Clarifies Kylian Mbappé Remarks, Emphasizes Team Balance Over Individual Brilliance

Luis Enrique has addressed the widespread reaction to his past comments about Kylian Mbappé during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, insisting his words were misunderstood and never intended to question the French superstar’s world-class ability.

The Spanish coach, who managed Mbappé during a crucial period at PSG, explained that his earlier remarks about the forward needing to be more of a “team player” were not criticism of his talent, but rather a reflection of the demands placed on elite footballers at the highest level.

Luis Enrique made it clear that questioning Mbappé’s quality was never part of his thinking.

“First of all, people misunderstood what I said,” Enrique explained. “I never questioned Mbappé’s quality — that would be ridiculous. He is one of the best players in the world.”

Instead, the former PSG boss stressed that his message was rooted in the idea of balance within a team structure. According to Enrique, modern football requires more than attacking brilliance, even from players capable of deciding matches on their own.

“But when I spoke about being a ‘team player’, I was talking about balance,” he said. “At the highest level, it’s not only about what you do with the ball… it’s what you do without it.”

Enrique highlighted the importance of defensive contribution and collective effort, pointing out that pressing, tracking back, and supporting teammates are essential responsibilities — regardless of status or star power.

“Pressing, tracking back, helping your teammates — this is also part of the game,” he added. “And when you have a player with his talent, the expectation is even higher. Not lower.”

During his tenure at PSG, Enrique’s primary objective was to construct a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest levels of European football. He emphasized that his role was to strengthen the collective, rather than build a system centered around individual brilliance alone.

“My job was to build a team, not just highlight individuals,” Enrique stated.

The Spanish tactician also made it clear that his high standards for Mbappé were a sign of belief rather than criticism. In his view, the French forward possesses the ability to elevate his game even further by embracing every aspect of modern football.

“Mbappé can do everything,” Enrique said. “That’s why I demanded more from him. Because if he adds that to his game… then he becomes unstoppable.”
