Kylian Mbappé has found himself at the center of fresh debate after a surprising defensive statistic began circulating online, leaving football fans divided over the Real Madrid star’s contribution off the ball.
According to a widely shared ranking comparing defensive contributions per 90 minutes in La Liga,
Mbappé was placed near the bottom of the list, sitting 344th out of 344 players, including goalkeepers.
The French superstar reportedly recorded just six defensive contributions, with a rating of 0.20, even ranking below Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who registered higher numbers while spending most of his matches between the posts.

The stat quickly exploded across social media, with rival fans and football commentators wasting little time poking fun at the numbers.
One viral reaction joked that Courtois “literally spends 90 minutes standing in a 7×2 meter box and still contributes more defensively than Mbappé,” while others branded the figures “scary” for a player of his profile.
However, plenty of supporters rushed to Mbappé’s defense, arguing that the criticism misses the bigger picture.
Many pointed out that the 26-year-old is an attacking player whose main responsibility is scoring goals, not making tackles or tracking runners deep into his own half.
One fan dismissed the discussion entirely, writing: “He’s an attacking player for Christ’s sake. This stat is pointless,” while another highlighted the absurdity of expecting elite forwards to dominate defensive metrics, especially when Mbappé continues to deliver in front of goal.
Others revisited his final months at Paris Saint-Germain, referencing reports that former manager Luis Enrique wanted greater defensive discipline from the French captain.
Some fans claimed concerns about his work rate without the ball had existed long before his move to Spain.
Still, supporters were quick to remind critics of Mbappé’s elite output, pointing out that despite the defensive criticism, he remains among La Liga’s leading scorers.
One response sarcastically called it a “crazy fact” that the same player being mocked for defensive work is also outperforming nearly everyone in front of goal.
The debate once again highlights the divide in modern football over superstar forwards, with some demanding complete all-round contributions and others insisting goals alone justify a player’s place, especially when that player is Kylian Mbappé.
