‘Hitman 2’ and ‘Dark Nuns’ Thriving as Long-Awaited Sequels

The films Hitman 2 and Dark Nuns are generating buzz as successful sequels released five and ten years after their predecessors, respectively.

Both films have demonstrated strong box office performances, captivating audiences with their distinct genres.

Hitman 2 (Director Choi Won-seop), released on the 22nd, is a comic action movie featuring Jun (played by Kwon Sang-woo), a once-successful blockbuster writer who suddenly finds himself labeled as a “brainless writer.” When a terrorist attack mimicking his latest webtoon occurs, he is wrongly framed as the culprit. The film took the top spot at the box office upon release, surpassing Harbin.

The movie gained attention when Kwon Sang-woo candidly expressed his desire to “beat Song Hye-kyo and Do Kyung-soo” at the box office, even going so far as to kneel in earnestness.

Given that Hitman attracted 2.4 million viewers despite being released during the pandemic, anticipation for its sequel was high, and its release met these expectations, quickly securing the number-one spot.

Although Hitman 2 faced brief competition from Dark Nuns (Director Kwon Hyuk-jae), released two days later, it managed to reclaim the top position at the box office within three days. The film, with its family-friendly comedy appeal, established itself as the dominant film of the Lunar New Year holiday and has continued its strong performance.

Meanwhile, Dark Nuns is a supernatural horror film that follows a group of people performing a forbidden ritual to save a boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit. Despite their differing genres, both films share the commonality of being long-awaited sequels.

As of the 2nd, Hitman 2 has garnered 1.96 million cumulative viewers and is on the verge of surpassing the 2 million mark. Dark Nuns has achieved 1.43 million viewers. The break-even points for both films are set at 2.3 million and 1.6 million viewers, respectively. Given that Dark Nuns surpassed 1 million viewers more quickly, it is expected to reach profitability first.

As these two sequels continue their strong box office runs, industry observers are keen to see which film will cross the break-even threshold first and how far their success will extend.
