The Suzume Film Grosses Ten Billion Yen, Whereas The First Slam Dunk Grosses Five Billion Yen

On Monday, the official Twitter account for Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) film disclosed that the picture has earned more than 10 billion yen (about $75.1 million) and sold 7.45 million tickets in the 45 days since its release in Japan. In its seventh weekend, the picture ranked second.

Furthermore, in its first 23 days, The First Slam Dunk film made 5,067,029,010 billion yen (about US$38.0 million) and sold 3,407,275 million tickets. In its fourth weekend, the film topped the box office.

Suzume opened at #1 on November 11 and sold 1.33 million tickets and earned 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days.

In the film, Nanoka Hara plays the heroine Suzume Iwato. Hokuto Matsumura, a member of the SixTONES idol group, made his voice acting debut in the film as Sta Munakata, a young guy who begins on a voyage with Suzume as the “Door-Closing Master.”

Shinkai directed and wrote the screenplay for the film. He is also credited with coming up with the original story.

The characters were created by Masayoshi Tanaka. The animation director was Kenichi Tsuchiya. The art director was Takumi Tanji.

The film was produced by CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. The film is being distributed by TOHO. The film was scored by RADWIMPS.

The film was scored by Seattle-based Hollywood film composer Kazuma Jinnouchi. One of the film’s theme songs, “Suzume,” was sung by TikTok star Toaka.

The first Slam Dunk film debuted at number one in its opening weekend. Over its opening weekend, the picture sold 847,000 tickets and grossed 1,295,808,780 yen (about $9.50 million).

On December 3, the film was released in Japan. The film is being shown in 40 IMAX theaters around Japan, as well as 34 Dolby Atmos theaters. On December 10, the film added Dolby Cinema screenings.

Takehiko Inoue, the author of the Slam Dunk manga, directed and wrote the film at Toei Animation. Character designer/animation director Yasuyuki Ebara and technical directors Katsuhiko Kitada, Naoki Miyahara, Toshio hashi, and Y Kamatani.

The CG was directed by Daiki Nakazawa and produced by Yta Ogura. The art was directed by Kazuo Ogura. Yota Tsuruoka and Koji Kasamatsu co-directed the sound.
