Quique Setien: Lionel Messi and Barcelona will always be together

Despite him still being the club’s talisman, Lionel Messi’s commitment to Barcelona have been called into question in recent times.

Messi surprisingly has caused controversies as of late. He was rumored to be the master mind behind the Barca players’ plans of rejecting wage deferral and also previously got involved in a clash with sporting director Eric Abidal.

This has fueled talks of his exit from Camp Nou, linking him to the likes of Inter Milan and Manchester City.

However, the Argentine has not his off-field issues affect his performances on it. With a mouth-watering statistic of 24 goals and 16 assists from 31 games this season in all competitions, he shows no signs of slowing down.

And Quique Setien is confident the 32-year old, who joined the club’s youth set-up at the age of 16, will hang up his boots at Barca.

“Him leaving? It won’t happen. Messi and Barcelona will always be together. That’s just the way it is,” Setien told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Leo has been at Barca for 20 years and no-one could say there is a situation of breakdown.

“Some things happen at big clubs, it’s normal that there are conflicts. But they resolve themselves. There’s a great feeling in the relationship between Messi and Barcelona, which goes beyond money and interests.”
