‘Colony’ Becomes 2026’s Fastest Film to Hit 3 Million Moviegoers, Breaks Even in Just 10 Days

South Korean zombie blockbuster Colony is already proving to be one of the biggest cinematic success stories of 2026 after reaching its breakeven point just 10 days after release.

According to the Korean Film Council, Colony officially surpassed 3 million moviegoers on May 30, reaching a cumulative total of 3,109,480 admissions while maintaining its position at No. 1 at the Korean box office.

The film first premiered in theaters on May 21, meaning it took only 10 days to surpass the 3 million mark and recover its production costs, an impressive milestone that signals a major commercial success for the highly anticipated zombie thriller.

Colony has also shattered records in the process, becoming the fastest film released in 2026 to cross 1 million, 2 million, and 3 million admissions.

The film has even outpaced the pace set by the year’s previous box office sensation, The King’s Warden, which had dominated headlines with its record breaking performance earlier this year.

Colony (Korean: 군체) is a 2026 South Korean action horror film directed and written by acclaimed filmmaker Yeon Sang Ho, with Choi Gyu Seok serving as co writer.

Best known globally for redefining the zombie genre with Train to Busan and Peninsula, Yeon once again returns to horror with an intense survival thriller centered around a rapidly spreading outbreak.

The film follows Kwon Se Jeong, a biotechnology professor portrayed by Jun Ji Hyun, who receives an unexpected invitation from her ex husband Han Gyu Seong to attend the Chains Bio Conference together at Doongwoori Building. Though hesitant, Se Jeong agrees, motivated by both scientific curiosity and lingering questions about her ex husband’s intentions.

However, what begins as a professional reunion quickly spirals into horror.

During the conference, Gyu Seong asks Se Jeong to deliver a greeting card to event host Kang Woo Cheol. Before she can reach him, she is interrupted by Seo Young Cheol, a brilliant but dangerous biologist harboring resentment toward Woo Cheol. In a terrifying act of revenge, Young Cheol injects Woo Cheol with a mysterious virus, transforming him within minutes into an extremely violent zombie and triggering a devastating outbreak.

With the building immediately placed under lockdown, Se Jeong and other survivors find themselves trapped inside as the infection rapidly spreads.

As panic erupts, Se Jeong uses her biotechnology expertise to study the infected and uncover a horrifying truth: these are not ordinary zombies. Instead, the infected continuously evolve in unpredictable ways, becoming an ever changing threat.

Forced into survival mode, Se Jeong leads desperate efforts to escape the quarantined building while trying to stop the outbreak from spreading beyond its walls.

The film features an ensemble cast including Koo Kyo Hwan as Seo Young Cheol, the genius scientist responsible for the outbreak who claims to possess a vaccine, Ji Chang Wook as Choi Hyun Seok, a building security employee desperately trying to protect his disabled older sister, and Kim Shin Rok as Choi Hyun Hee, who becomes trapped during what was supposed to be a simple lunch visit.

Shin Hyun Been stars as Gong Seol Hee, a biotechnologist investigating the crisis from outside the building after losing contact with her husband, while Go Soo portrays Han Gyu Seong, Se Jeong’s ex husband who becomes trapped inside and risks his life trying to protect survivors.

Before its theatrical release, Colony generated significant international attention after making its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 15. Distributed by Showbox, the film officially opened in South Korean theaters on May 21.

The movie’s explosive box office performance suggests audiences are once again embracing Yeon Sang Ho’s signature blend of suspense, horror, and emotional storytelling, with Colony quickly emerging as one of the standout films of the year.

Having already reached profitability in under two weeks and broken multiple box office records, industry attention is now turning to just how far Colony can go as momentum continues.
