A star-studded cast has officially been assembled for tvN’s upcoming historical romance drama Whale Star, with actors Choi Woo-shik, Mun Ka-young, and Heo Nam-jun leading the highly anticipated series set to premiere in 2027.
Based on the popular Naver webtoon of the same name, Whale Star transports viewers to Gyeongseong in 1926, during Korea’s Japanese occupation.
The drama follows the story of Heo Soo-a, a housemaid working for a pro-Japanese family, whose life changes after she rescues Kang Ui-hyun, an independence activist who falls into the sea.
Their encounter sparks a moving tale of love, sacrifice, and resistance during one of Korea’s most turbulent periods.
The project has already attracted significant attention thanks to its acclaimed directing team. The series will be co-directed by Heo Jin-ho, known for films such as August’s Christmas, alongside Yoo Beom-sang, who previously helmed dramas including Twinkling Watermelon and Study Group.

Choi Woo-shik has been cast as Kang Ui-hyun, an independence activist whose father collaborates with the Japanese authorities.
While fighting to help liberate his homeland alongside fellow activist Song Hae-su, Kang Ui-hyun develops a deep connection with Heo Soo-a after she unknowingly saves his life. The role is expected to showcase both the character’s unwavering patriotism and his heartfelt romance.
Mun Ka-young will portray Heo Soo-a, a compassionate and resilient young woman caught between duty and her growing feelings for Kang Ui-hyun.
As she becomes entangled with both Kang Ui-hyun and Song Hae-su, she finds herself facing emotional conflicts that will shape her future.
Meanwhile, Heo Nam-jun takes on the role of Song Hae-su, a passionate independence activist who lost his family in the Jeju Massacre.
Driven by his devotion to the independence movement, Song Hae-su is willing to sacrifice everything for the cause. Fate repeatedly intertwines his path with Heo Soo-a, creating a compelling dynamic among the drama’s central characters.
The supporting cast is equally impressive. Veteran actor Yoo Jae-myung will play Kang Geun-hyeong, Kang Ui-hyun’s ambitious father and a pro-Japanese collaborator whose actions are expected to become a major source of conflict throughout the series.
Kang Han-na has been cast as Han Yeon-kyung, a determined woman who continues fighting for independence despite losing her husband and family. Her character embodies resilience and quiet strength amid immense personal tragedy.
Adding further depth to the story, Kim Yeo-jin will portray Hwang Soon-im, the owner of the Whale Star Cafe, which serves as a sanctuary for independence activists in Gyeongseong. The character is expected to provide both emotional support and leadership to those risking their lives for freedom.
Actress Gong Seung-yeon will make a special appearance as Yeo Yun-hwa, the daughter of a pro-Japanese family and the mistress whom Heo Soo-a serves. Although initially harsh toward Soo-a, she secretly admires her, creating a layered and emotionally complex relationship.
With its blend of romance, history, and patriotism, Whale Star aims to tell the story of young people who risk everything to protect both their loved ones and their homeland at a time when even speaking out could come at a deadly cost. The drama’s themes of sacrifice, hope, and enduring love are expected to resonate strongly with viewers.
The series also marks an exciting new chapter for its lead stars. Choi Woo-shik returns to television following his film Number One and the variety show Youth Over Flowers: Limited Edition.
Mun Ka-young comes back to the small screen after earning widespread acclaim and winning Best Actress at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance in Once We Were Us.
Meanwhile, Heo Nam-jun continues his rise after achieving global popularity through the Netflix hit My Royal Nemesis, which topped the platform’s non-English TV rankings.
As anticipation continues to grow, Whale Star is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about Korean dramas of 2027, bringing together a powerful cast and an emotional story set against one of the most significant periods in Korean history.
