A lot of footballers venture into coaching or management when their paying days are over.
He admits when he was younger the idea of managing Liverpool or England was appealing.
Speaking to Sky Sports, however, he decided the closer he got to his playing days being over that it was not really worth the hassle.
He said:
“If you’d asked me in my 20s, whether with England or with Liverpool, I’d have said I’d have been a manager.”
“But as I got closer to finishing my career, I started looking more at the pitfalls of management.”
“Now, part of me thinks it was for the best I stayed away.”
“I used to look at it and think, is it worth everything that you go through?”
Carragher does admit though if he ever was a manager he would be a Jose Mourinho.
He added:
“If I was a manager, I’d be more Mourinho than Guardiola because of the upbringing I had and how I saw football.”
“I was always about the result above all as a player.
“I couldn’t go on to a training pitch and try to coach Barcelona-type football.”
“Would I say the fear of failure put me off going into management? No, but it’s definitely something you look at.”
