Brazil international Melo reveals how they were instructed to stop Messi

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has maintained his reputation of being among the world’s very best for almost a decade now.

Palmeiras midfielder Filipe Melo has lauded Lionel Messi as a ‘unique’ player. So much so that he was forced to use physical force in order to stop him.

“He’s a unique player,” Melo told in an interview with Argentine newspaper Clarin.

“When Brazil played against him we used to say ‘we have to kick him once each, we have to rotate’.

“If we didn’t, it was too difficult to mark him. We didn’t want to break him, just to cut his rhythm and to disturb him – it was tactical.”
