Christopher Nolan confirms The Odyssey runtime will be shorter than Oppenheimer, explains IMAX limitations behind decision

Christopher Nolan has officially revealed new details about the runtime of his upcoming epic The Odyssey, confirming that the film will run shorter than his Oscar-winning historical drama Oppenheimer despite its massive mythological scale.

The director shared the update during recent verified interviews while discussing the technical and storytelling approach behind his next major release. Although The Odyssey is described as a sweeping epic rooted in one of history’s most celebrated mythological tales, Nolan made it clear that the runtime will remain under three hours due to both creative pacing and technical factors.

Speaking about the scale of the project, Christopher Nolan said:

“It’s an epic film, as the subject matter demands… But it is shorter.”

The statement confirms that while audiences can expect the grandeur typically associated with Nolan’s filmmaking style, the duration will be more controlled than his previous blockbuster.

IMAX limitations influenced the runtime decision

One of the key reasons behind the shorter runtime is the film’s ambitious technical production method. The Odyssey was shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, a choice that enhances visual immersion but also introduces physical limits on how long a film can run within the format.

Christopher Nolan explained that the maximum length supported by traditional IMAX film projection falls under the three-hour mark. This technical boundary played a significant role in shaping the film’s final length.

Rather than stretching the runtime unnecessarily, the director chose to embrace the format’s constraints, allowing the storytelling to remain focused and paced efficiently while still delivering a cinematic spectacle.

How The Odyssey compares to Oppenheimer

The comparison between Nolan’s upcoming film and his previous success Oppenheimer has become a major point of interest among fans and industry observers.

Oppenheimer, released in 2023, ran for 180 minutes (three hours) and became one of Nolan’s longest films to date. Its extended runtime allowed for a detailed exploration of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life, the Manhattan Project, and the consequences of nuclear development.

In contrast, The Odyssey has been officially confirmed to run under three hours, though the exact runtime has not yet been publicly announced. Despite the shorter length, expectations remain high due to the scale of its narrative and production.

The upcoming film adapts Homer’s legendary Greek epic, widely regarded as one of the foundational works of Western literature. The story follows the long and perilous journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War, encountering mythological creatures, divine forces, and personal trials along the way.
