Real Madrid ran out 2-1 winners against Real Sociedad over the weekend in a match that saw a few controversial decisions made in favor of the new league leaders.
Los Blancos were awarded a penalty, through which they got the lead, when Diego Llorente was adjudged to have fouled Vinicius Junior inside the box.
A few minutes later, Karim Benzema doubled his side’s lead. The goal risked getting canceled as Benzema appeared to have controlled the ball using his arm, but a careful review by VAR proved otherwise and it stood.
Between the two Madrid goals, Adnan Januzaj believed he had reignited Sociedad’s winning chances with a thumping strike from distance, only to see his goal ruled offside.
A large portion of the talking points after the match was dedicated to the controversial decisions by match officials but Zinedine Zidane had no interest in discussing any such things.
“I haven’t seen the incidents, but I’ve been told there’s a penalty on Vinicius and that Karim’s goal is legal,” Zidane said after the match [via Marca].
“It annoys me that we just end up talking about the referees and it’s as if we’ve done nothing on the pitch.
“We’re not going to control what is said. We win on the pitch and that’s what we did today. It’s a deserved win.”
