Brazil’s attacking evolution across recent World Cups is once again fuelling debate online after a viral graphic comparing the nation’s frontline from 2014 through a projected 2026 lineup sparked strong reactions from football fans.
The image compares Brazil’s attacking options across the last four editions of the FIFA World Cup, highlighting how the Seleção’s frontline has shifted from the Neymar-led generation of 2014 to a younger crop expected to feature prominently in 2026.
Brazil’s 2014 attack featured Neymar alongside Hulk, Oscar, and Fred, a lineup many fans have retrospectively criticised for lacking depth beyond its superstar forward. The 2018 World Cup squad saw Neymar supported by Philippe Coutinho, Willian, and Gabriel Jesus, while the 2022 edition included attacking talents such as Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Richarlison, and Neymar.

However, it was the projected 2026 attack that drew the strongest reactions online, with many fans questioning whether Brazil’s current generation can match the quality of previous eras.
One fan criticised Brazil’s 2014 squad selection, arguing that the team was heavily dependent on Neymar and had little chance of success after the forward suffered a tournament-ending injury.
“That 2014 attack was so bad,” one user wrote, blaming former manager Luiz Felipe Scolari’s tactical decisions and squad choices during Brazil’s home tournament campaign.
Others mocked the projected 2026 lineup, with some fans joking that older generations of Brazilian football legends may have valid reasons to be frustrated with the team’s current direction. A number of supporters also voiced concern over Brazil’s broader struggles in recent years, describing the national team as being “a mess.”
Despite the criticism, many football fans remain optimistic that Brazil’s younger stars can still develop into a formidable attack before the next World Cup. With players like Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Endrick, and other emerging talents expected to take on larger roles, supporters are hopeful the five-time world champions can rediscover the attacking brilliance that once defined them.
As discussions continue online, the viral comparison has reignited a familiar question among fans: is Brazil experiencing a temporary transition period, or has the nation’s attacking dominance truly declined?
